The vast expanse of waterways which make up the Broads are almost entirely man-made and newer than you probably think. They began life as peat workings during the 12th Century. By the 14th Century, when the digging ceased, the vast network of worked channels flooded, creating a richly diverse and unique wetland with abundant wildlife.
